What is Dry Needling?
Dry Needling is a therapy method that gains more and more popularity with therapists but also patients. During a treatment, the therapist looks for active Triggerpoints, so called knots in a muscle. Once the therapist palpated a Triggerpoint, a very thin Acupuncture needle is pierced into the muscle. Reaching the Triggerpoint, an involuntary muscle twitch happens as a natural reaction from the muscle. Thanks to that twitch, the muscle relaxes immediately. Patient and therapist can feel the reaction immediately. Since the muscle is relieved of it’s excessive tension, the patient can feel an immediate pain relief.
For which complaints can Dry Needling be used?
Dry Needling is a treatment method that can be used for a wide range of complaints. The most common injuries and complaints we use Dry Needling for are:
- neck problems
- headaches and Migraines
- back problems
- Tennis- and Golfers elbow
- Shin splints
- Achillestendon- and calf problems
- Sciatic pain
How does a treatment look like?
If during an assessment it is clear that the pain or complaint derives from an active Triggerpoint in the muscle, the therapist discusses the option of using Dry Needling with the patient. Inserting the needle is not painful, after reaching the Triggerpoint, an involuntary twitch happens. After the treatment, the muscle can feel “tired” and sore, this feeling will not last for very long. The actual treatment with the needle does not take a long time, it is always complemented with massage, stretches, taping or exercise therapy.
Who is suited for the therapy and what can you expect?
Dry Needling can be used with everyone that feels stiffness and pain in the muscles. The treatment is very quick and effective. Even though you might feel a bit sore after the treatment, you will appreciate the immediate relief of the treatment. The soreness will not last for long.
Dry needling is part of a regular physiotherapy session and is therefore covered from all Dutch Health care insurance companies.
